A Manchester Story with Malaysian Roots

Malaya Hemp™ began in 2017 with a husband and wife who wanted to help people understand hemp and CBD. Based in Manchester, United Kingdom, Abdul Halim Mohd Pauzi and Dr. Nurul Ain Sahbudin brought together their experience in business and education to build a brand with strong Malaysian roots.

They saw a gap between the growing discussion about hemp in the UK and the limited information available to many Malay-speaking communities. They wanted to make that information easier to understand and give people a place to ask questions.

The People Behind Malaya Hemp

Abdul Halim Mohd Pauzi

Abdul Halim comes from a business background. He has always been interested in finding new opportunities and connecting familiar traditions with new ideas. His interest in hemp led him to learn more about CBD products, how they are made and the standards expected in the industry.

For him, Malaya Hemp is about building a business while helping people understand a subject that is often misunderstood.

Dr. Nurul Ain Sahbudin

Dr. Nurul Ain is an academic who completed her PhD in Education at the University of Manchester. She believes that knowledge should have a practical purpose and benefit the people around her.

Her background in education brings a thoughtful approach to the brand. Together, the couple combine business experience with an interest in research, learning and public understanding.

From Learning to Building a Brand

When the couple entered the UK hemp industry in 2017, they had a great deal to learn. They spent time understanding the research, product standards and responsibilities involved in working with hemp and CBD.

Living in the UK gave them the opportunity to follow developments in the industry more closely. Their involvement has also included industry associations such as the Cannabis Trades Association UK (CTA UK) and the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA).

As their knowledge grew, so did their purpose. They wanted to bring clearer information to Malaysian audiences and encourage informed conversations about hemp across Malay communities, the wider Muslim community and Southeast Asia.

Understanding Hemp and CBD

What Is CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the naturally occurring compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp is a type of cannabis grown for uses that include fibre, seeds and extracts.

CBD is different from THC, the compound responsible for the intoxicating “high” associated with cannabis. A product’s ingredients and test results matter, because CBD products do not all have the same composition.

CBD oil and hempseed oil are also different. CBD oil contains a CBD extract mixed with a carrier oil. Hempseed oil is pressed from hemp seeds and is not the same as a CBD extract.

Why Clear Information Matters

Hemp, CBD and cannabis are often discussed as though they mean the same thing. This can make it difficult for people to understand a product or judge the claims made about it.

We want to help make those differences clearer. That means explaining the ingredients, recognising the limits of research and keeping customer experiences separate from scientific evidence.

Interest in a natural product should come with sensible questions about its quality, suitability and intended use. “Natural” alone does not tell someone whether a product is right for them.

Looking Beyond CBD Oil

The founders’ interest in hemp goes beyond the products on a shop shelf. They are also interested in what hemp could mean for education, farming, manufacturing and business.

Research and Health

CBD is being studied for a range of possible medical uses. The couple believe this research deserves careful discussion, with a clear distinction between early findings and treatments supported by clinical evidence.

Skincare and Personal Care

CBD is used in products such as creams, balms, lotions and serums. For Malaya Hemp, this is another reason to help customers understand the whole formulation rather than choosing a product based on one ingredient alone.

Food and Drink

CBD has also attracted interest from food and drink businesses. This brings opportunities for product development, alongside questions about ingredients, safety and the rules that apply in each market.

Farming and Manufacturing

Hemp has uses beyond CBD, including seed oil, textiles and building materials. These uses are part of the wider conversation about how the plant could support farmers, manufacturers and new businesses.

Building Understanding and Trust

The hemp industry still faces challenges. Rules differ between countries, product quality can vary, and public discussion often mixes research with personal opinion.

These challenges are part of why Malaya Hemp was started. Abdul Halim and Dr. Nurul Ain want to encourage better questions, clearer explanations and a more informed discussion about hemp and CBD.

Their interest in the potential of a halal hemp economy is a long-term area of learning and discussion. Any claim about halal certification needs to relate to the specific product and its certification.

From Manchester to the Malaysian communities they hope to reach, their aim remains straightforward: build a business, share what they learn and help people make better-informed choices.
